For those foreign students who have secured admission in Delhi University, the first brush with the 'Land of the Orient' may fill them with fascination and thrill. But as soon as the "honeymoon" phase will get over, they might just face culture shock after the first few weeks of your arrival. Lake of knowledge about what is appropriate or inappropriate may even bring about physical and emotional discomfort to them. They might find some of our Indian isms confounding. Here's what you need to keep an eye out for.

Indian standard time :

Punctuality is not something we Indians swear by. The euphemism 'Indian stretchable time' has not been coined for nothing. turning up late for social occasions like marriage and parties, office meetings, even getting back to work way after lunch hour is over or leaving early for home, much before official time-all these are typical examples. This does not, however, mean that your professors will be late for class. Foreign students might take some time to come to terms with the concept of timeliness.

Lack of concept of queuing :

The right to jump a queue and shove our way forward is an inborn instinct in many of us, be it cinema halls or buses or the collage canteen. This could be quite unnerving for students who think that asking for something out of turn is downright unacceptable.

Preference for hierarchy :

Indians tend to think hierarchically. Addressing teachers as "sir" or "ma'am", seeking permission from parents for late nights or even before buying something expensive are some of the manifestations of this cultural oddity.

Gender roles :

Gender roles are quite clearly defined, with some amount of male chauvinism accepted among boys and girls alike. Be prepared to deal with this.

Overpricing Woes :

Overcharging of items by shopkeepers, especially for foreign students will take place occasionally. Prepare them to bargain hard, starting with as low as 50 percent of the initial offer. In order to cope with the initial shock, the single most important thing to remember is to be flexible. They should learn to expect the unexpected but have a positive outlook through it all. Avoid unpleasant situations and always seek assistance from teachers, classmates, seniors and counsellors. It is important to understand that not everything will be the same as in their own home country, but the idea is to look out for certain similarities and positive points that they might think to be enjoyable and laudable. A great strategy would be to meet as many new people as possible, particularly look for the like minded ones. Integrating and getting involved in activities of the host country is the best way to shed off the "we-are-different" mask. Once this mask off, culture shock won't trouble that much. Despite the initial hurdles. the long term experience is always worth it.

Impurities In Pharmacopoeial Substances

Chemical purity means freedom from foreign matters. However, it is very very costly to manufacture chemical substances of absolute purity. For example, the best level of purity reached out during mass-production of sugar and/or rock-salt (even as vacuum salt) is around 99.9 % if sucrose/sodium chloride. Therefore, it is necessary to strike a balance (compromise) for obtaining a pharmacopoeial substance whose cost is reasonable and which is tolerably pure for medicinal purposes. In other words, the product may not be very costly and yet it must be safe for medicinal use. The pharmacopoeias prescribe various tests for purity for each substance and also fix limits of tolerance for certain impurities such as for arsenic , lead, heavy metals , iron ,chlorides and sulphates , etc . These impurities are commonly present in pharmacopoeial substances , though , in traces i.e. in very very small amounts . Arsenic and lead are cumulative i.e these are neither excreted not catabolised in the body and, therefore, these keep on accumulating in the body. If these are present in more amounts than their prescribed limits of tolerance, then these may prove harmful as these are toxic substances. Therefore, Pharmacopoeias fix limits of tolerance for these impurities in many compounds depending upon their dose and frequency of doses i.e depending upon the quantity of the drug which is to be administered daily for its therapeutic action.

Handling And Storage Of Radioactive Materials

Great care must be taken in handling and storage of radioactive materials so as to protect people and personnel from harmful radiations which the radioactive materials emits. Exposure to radiation can cause serious complications including leukemia(blood cancer). Therefore persons handling radioisotopes must use Lead shielding as these absorb radiations. The shielding effects can be achieved by thick(one metre thickness) concrete blocks or with pure distilled water layer. Water layer stops radioactive radiations and allow visible light to pass, while thick thick concrete block stop all the radiation. Certain precautions to be taken while working with detectors, tracer experiments, radio-assays, manufacturing or handling radioactive materials are :

Radioactive materials must never be touched with hand but handled by means of forceps or suitable instruments.
Smoking, eating, drinking activities must not be carried out in the laboratory where the radioactive materials are handled. Food contaminated with radioactive material can cause serious damage of the internal organs.
Sufficient protective clothing(shielding) must be used while handling the materials.
Radioactive materials should be kept in suitable labelled containers, shielding by lead bricks and preferably in a remote corner.
Areas where radioactive materials are stored or used should be monitored, that is continuously tested for radioactivity.
Disposal of radioactive materials is done with great care.

Self-driven Cars Come Closer To Reality

Washington, June 1 (ANI) : Advancing towards cars that's drive on their own, Volvo Cars Corp. has tested its new S60 model, which has the first in-car system that can sense an imminent collision with pedestrians and brake automatically if the driver doesn't.

The system is the latest in a line of developments made possible by sophisticated sensors based on cameras, radar and lasers.

The sensors already provide drivers with adaptive cruise control, which alters a car's speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front as well as technology such as semi-autonomous parking systems.

Jonas Ekmark, a researcher at Volvo headquarters near Gothenburg, Sweden, has said that we are entering an era in which vehicles will also gather real-time information about the weather and highway hazards, using this to improve fuel efficiency and make life less stressful for the driver and safer for all road users.

"Our long-term goal is the collision-free traffic system,"the Washington post quoted Ekmark as saying.

Alan Taub, vice president for research and development at General Motors, vehicles on the road by 2015.

They will need a driver to handle busy city streets and negotiate complex intersections, but once on the highway they will be able to steer, accelerate and void collisions unaided.

A few years later, he predicts, drivers will be able to take their hands off the wheel completely.

"I see the potential for launching fully autonomous vehicles by 2020,"he said.

While Japan is leading the way in autonomous vehicles, collaboration between seven European manufacturers and universities are developing a system that would allow up to eight cars a little more than a yard apart driving in convoy, controlled by a professional driver.

Drivers will be able to work, read, watch films or even sleep while their cars are driven for them.

What fully autonomous vehicles might be like is hinted at by an experimental car built by a GM-backed team of engineering students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Their 'boss' car earned a 2 million dollar prize in 2007 by outperforming simulated urban environment.

The vehicles executed complex man-oeuvres such as merging into flowing traffic, passing, while interacting with other autonomous vehicles and 30 human-driven ones.

Taub has predicted that by about 2020, vehicles like boss will start to appear on public roads ; drivers will be able to disengage totally and hand control over to the car, reports New Scientist.

The German firm is fitting a 2.0-liter TTS Coupe quattro with its "Autonomous" system, essentially a computer in the boot that will guide the car along the 13 twisting miles of the Pikes peak near Colorado Springs, USA.

The project is being overseen by the Volkswagen Group Automotive Innovation Laboratory and although it will not be a competition run, Audi says it will help the firm "explore the best capabilities of current and future driver assistance technologies to enhance the experience behind the steering wheel for future driver generations".

Sania Mirza Isn't Happy

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza isn't happy about Hyderabadi Damaad, an upcoming low-budget film. It is reportedly based on the controversy surrounding her marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Slamming the film's producer for drawing inspiration from her life for the script, Sania has stated that she is intrigued that the filmmaker didn't bother ti inform her.

The film's heroine starlet Debina Bonnerjee, who plays a character inspired by Sania, has assured that the tennis star need not be worried. "The film is not a biographical piece of work on Sania. Hyderabadi Damaad will be adequately fictionalised, "Debina said. "whether it is Jawaharlal Nehru or Indira Gandi, inspiration can come from anyone. Since Sania is a star tennis player, she will inspire people. We are not going to depict Sania's life exactly as it is on the screen."

Sania on her part is concerned that the film's director might rely on information picked from inaccurate media coverage. "I hope he makes it clear that the film in question in only a fictional account,"she has said. While Debina said "some cinematic liberties" will be taken, she felt Sania's discomfort is understandable". The actress added : "I will only say that it's just an inspiration and not merely copy."

While Debina has been cast as a hotshot tennis star modeled on Sania, other actors in the film cast include Amar Upadhyaya and Ali Merchant. Neither Debina nor the directed is ready to divulge the name of the actor who will play Shoaib Malik in the film. "We will start shooting the film next month,"said Debina, who has already started working hard to get in shape for her role."I have lost weight that I had put on to play Sita in the Imagine TV serial Ramayan. Plus, I have hit the gym and an toning my body with horse-riding and kick boxing sessions,:Debina said.

Advantages

They are economical.

Disadvantages

(c) Converting the mixed ingredients into granules : The crystalline medicament can be compressed to get good quality compressed tablets. In case the medicament's along with excipients are in powder from it cannot be compressed as such into tablets because:

In all these table machines the compression is achieved by filling the required quantity of granules into the dies and then compressing them in between the lower punch and the upper punch. The single punch machine is used for small scale manufacturing, whereas the other machines are used for a large scale manufacturing. Rotary machines, having about 70 sets of dies produce about 1200 tablets in one minute.
